SDG Pioneer?

SDG Pioneers

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) lay out a clear vision for a sustainable future and will shape a new era for business. As part of our Making Global Goals Local Business campaign, each year, the UN Global Compact celebrates a group of SDG Pioneers — business leaders who are doing an exceptional job to advance the Global Goals through a principles-based approach.

In the spirit of giving young people a seat at the table to build a sustainable future, in 2019, the UN Global Compact will focus the search for SDG Pioneers to young professionals aged 35 and under.

Seventeen Global Compact Local Networks are hosting country-level SDG Pioneers programmes this year to seek out young professionals locally who will then compete in a global round. The country-level programmes will take place from February to May 2019

The winner of the Local Round Egypt will be known in early May and will receive the title: “2019 Global Compact Network Egypt SDG Pioneer”.

The 2019 UN Global Compact SDG Pioneers will then be announced and recognized during the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 74) in New York this September.

Our Global Campaign

In 2018, over 150 nominations were received from over 50 countries, from which ten finalists were selected by the SDG Pioneers Selection Group, exemplifying how business can be a force for good in addressing the challenges we face as a global society.

An SDG Pioneers Selection Group, comprised of representatives of the Board and Expert Networks of the UN Global Compact, the Global Compact Network Council, academia, UN Private Sector Focal Points and previous SDG Pioneers. The Selection Group voted on the nominees based on a set of criteria, including the individuals’ commitment to embedding the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact into their companies’ core strategies and advancing the Global Goals, as well as their engagement with the UN Global Compact and its Local Networks.

FAQ

Who are the 2019 SDG Pioneers?

2019 SDG Pioneers are Young Professionals (35 and under) — working at any level in a company — who are doing an exceptional job of making global goals local business. Through their own company or by mobilizing other businesses, they are helping to reach one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while also contributing to business success.

How is this year’s campaign different from previous years?

In 2019, to align with this year’s Global Impact Initiative to drive the SDGs through youth and innovation, the UN Global Compact SDG Pioneers programme is solely focused on young professionals (35 and under) who are working at a UN Global Compact participating company. As in previous years, the winners will be recognized as SDG Pioneers.

Who is eligible?

Young Professionals (35 and under) who are working at any level of a UN Global Compact Participant or Signatory company are eligible to apply or be nominated. To check whether an organization is a UN Global Compact Participant or Signatory company, please search the participant list online. If your company has yet to select its engagement tier, please see here for more information and to select your engagement tier.

For the 2019 SDG Pioneers, we only consider companies who have joined the UN Global Compact by 24 September 2018 and have submitted at least 1 Communication on Progress (CoP). If your company joined after the date, please consider applying for the 2020 SDG Pioneers programme.

The UN Global Compact reserves the right to remove the SDG Pioneer recognition if the company and/or individual is later deemed to be a reputational risk to the SDG Pioneer campaign and/or the UN Global Compact initiative.

Why do you categorize young professionals as 35 and under?

To align with most young professionals Programmes (JPO, World Bank, international development banks, etc.), the UN Global Compact also adopts the definition of young professionals as 35 and under.

What if I am affiliated with but not directly employed by a UN Global Compact signatory?

What are the “SDGs”?

At the heart of the “Agenda 2030” are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 related targets that address the most important economic, social, environmental and governance challenges of our time. To learn more about how companies are taking steps to contribute to achieving the SDGs visit the UN Global Compact website.
